Anyway, I took an intrest to this movie right from the start and only started to loose some of it at the bridge scene where the animation took a nasty turn when the German youth is pushed off the bridge and into the water. After that the story is generally interesting and seemed to hold my interest all throughout (spell check!!!!) the movie. The characters are nicely developed and since Im a plot and history buff this movie appeals to me somewhat. The voice acting was superb.... well about 90% of the time, there was one point where I laughed and a point where I trailed off since sometimes the dang characters speak to each other like their reading from a book with alot of big words and over use of verbs...... you'll see what I mean when you see it. The gripes I got with this movie is that it wasnt checked enough and must have been rushed or something since sometimes the voices repeat themselves and mix with further diologe. The voices themselves ranged in volume also and played havoc on me poor speakers and me ears. Sometimes they also are to quite to even hear. The animation in places gets tacky, like on the train toward the end with an attempt at moving the camera..... plus the scenery stops moving thats supposed to give the impression that the train is moving. The scenery ranges from complex like in the begining, to simple and kinda crappy toward the end and spread about here and there in the movie. Course its pretty damn hard to make 1940 Germany in 3dmm I know...... In some places the acting just gets downright corny. Examples are after the bridge scene (Boy I just luv that bridge scene) when the brother comes looking for his sister and they open fire on them, you dont even see a dang gun effect you just hear two little "pop"s which really brings you out of the mood this movie is trying to set for itself. Plus a little more effort should have been made in the characters movements which also really detract from the film, sometimes they'll just stand in mid step for a good while or pause in the most ridiculas position that its down right laughable. (most of them are "waiting" for a certain sound to end) Picky Picky, I know. What this film needed was a few action scenes, even more attention to detail like in the opening credits would have helped it out tremendiously. But that fact that it appears to have been researched before production began....... kinda earns my respect...... somewhat, since It seems more time was put into researching it than accually producing it. To try and sum up this random review: A good movie held back by only a few fatal flaws....... and those damned text boxes that appeared while the characters were talking (To show what they were thinking) and went away just as fast. Not bad for Tonys first real full length movie, the second movie should be a real step up from this.
